An article written by our nutritionist, Joana Pereira, a specialist in Women's Nutrition, discussing how nutrition can help in cases of adult acne.

Adult acne deserves our attention, not only because it alerts us to certain health issues that should be investigated, but also because it tells us that our diet needs to be adapted.

See what you can do:

  • Check for food allergies, especially in cases of acne rosacea;
  • Check for polycystic ovary syndrome, especially if you also have irregular periods (short cycles – less than 21 days – or long ones – more than 35 days, between each period);
  • Include foods rich in cysteine in your diet to increase toxin elimination (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts) and zinc (oysters, poultry, gizzards, pumpkin seeds, beans);
  • Reduce your intake of saturated fats (red meats, deli meats, butter, cheeses, Greek yogurts – did you know they usually contain cream?), dairy products, sugar, chocolate (mainly due to the presence of sugar and milk), and processed foods.

It is also important to emphasize that you should touch your pimples as little as possible (even nowadays, with highly sanitized hands).

As with everything regarding our health, seek and treat the cause; acne is merely a manifestation of that same cause.
